Let me preface this post by saying that there are few things in life I detest more than being cold. However, I do love a good adrenaline rush and can be convinced to try pretty much anything in the wellness world, so I gave Cryotherapy at try and am now hooked.
Whole Body Cryotherapy is a non-invasive treatment that triggers the body’s natural fight or flight response to aid healing throughout the body. The temperature can be set anywhere between -166 and -222 degrees Fahrenheit and the session lasts between 2-3 minutes.
It is believed to boost energy, relieve muscles and joints, decrease inflammation, enhance mood, increase metabolism, energy and improve sleep.
The first time I did it, I DEFINITELY experienced the fight or flight response. I was pretty panicked and my mind was going to all sorts of crazy places. But after that first time, its gotten increasingly more comfortable and I’m now able to withstand longer lengths of time at colder temperatures with none of the panic. I have noticed a positive effect in my energy, mood and sleep- and my Oura ring agrees.
I will say however, I’ve done Cryo two different times when I was feeling a little under the weather, and the next day I was far worse off then the day before. I think it’s a powerful therapy for the body but definitely a bit of a shock to the system and from my experience it’s best to do only when your immune system is in good shape.
